CALGARY’S TARTAN
Calgary’s tartan was designed by Donna Buie of Cochrane, the winner of a competition held by the St. Andrew-Caledonian Society of Calgary to find a tartan to represent Calgary. The official unveiling of the Calgary tartan was held August 3, 2003.
Tartan Colours
There are six colours incorporated into the Calgary Tartan, each representing an aspect of Calgary’s geography and history.
Red — representing the North-West Mounted Police.
Blue — for Calgary’s rivers, the Bow and Elbow.
Yellow — evokes the prairie and wheat fields that are found to the east.
Grey — representing the Rocky Mountains to the west.
Black — for the oil and gas industry which has made Calgary prosper.
White — represents Calgary’s pride in, and the symbolism of the white hat and the White Hatter Awards.
Dress Tartan
There is also a dress version of the Calgary tartan. The St. Andrew-Caledonian Society of Calgary granted permission to the Calgary Highland Dancing Association (CHDA) to develop a dress variation for their use.
